I give this whole trilogy 5/5 stars. I could write a love letter to this series, I loved them that much. I already enjoy end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it books, and this series delivers, big time. To oversimplify, think genetically modified virus given to soldiers by the US military to make them into killing machines very similar to vampires, and not the sparkly kind (light sensitive, tear you to pieces, sleep hanging upside down, very fast and very scary). Except they are way too good at their job and escape the research facility and cause the end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it scenario I talked about above. The books descibe the events leading up to, the aftermath and over 120 years after and beyond. They are truly epic novels. Also, the series is complete so you can read till the end with no cliffhangers!
I could literally go on for hours writing about what I liked about this book, so I will try to hit the highlights.
- This series contains some of the most real, relate-able, heart-wrenching characters of all time. Amy, the girl from nowhere, so strong and sure all of the time. She always knows exactly what needs to be don, even when it’s hard, but even she cannot predict how it all turns out in the end. And Alicia, she could be my favorite character of all time. So beautiful and brave, we get to follow her through great transformations, both wonderful and terrifying.
- Not only the main characters but the secondary and tertiary characters all have their own arcs complete with a beginning and end, leaving you feeling satisfied in knowing what happened to everyone. A reader can tell that Cronin has spent a lot of time fleshing them out. This means that all the ends are tied up at the end, and while he doesn’t spell things out for you, you aren’t left hanging in any way. This is a great feeling after all of the investment you have put into this story and characters.
- The “bad guys”, meaning hoards of bloodthirsty vampires with superhuman strength, are baaad, unpredictable, and scary! It’s great!
- Quick reads are great, but if you are looking for a long series, a giant tale to get swept away in for more then a minute, then this is a great choice.
Final Verdict:: These books are well worth the money spent. I have read them twice through already in the short amount of time that they have been out and am already looking forward to reading them again!
